LISTHAVEN, CLAVERMARK — A 34-year-old man has been arrested following the brutal killing of a traveling merchant earlier this week. Authorities say the suspect was apprehended within hours of the incident, which took place along a lesser-traveled route near the outskirts of Listhaven.
The victim has been identified as Ulred Bern, 29, a textile dealer from Derth. He was reportedly en route to Everwind City when he was attacked.
According to Listhaven’s Chief Magistrate, Commodore Rame Fegal, the suspect—whose name has not been released—targeted Bern due to his apparent affluence. The attacker is accused of disemboweling Bern while he was still alive in order to extract and consume the contents of his stomach.
“Such attacks are not uncommon in the Verges,” said Fegal. “This region is known for its volatility. Law enforcement is limited, resources are strained, and hunger often pushes people beyond the threshold of reason.”
Investigators believe the suspect deliberately sought out a victim of higher socioeconomic status, hoping the man’s final meal would offer nutritional value beyond what’s typically available in lower-income areas.
“It’s a kind of predatory desperation,” said one Hedding officer familiar with the investigation. “You’re not just being targeted for what you carry, but for what you’ve eaten.”
The suspect has been charged with capital murder and faces the death penalty under Clavic law. Trial proceedings are set to begin next week.
