VERGES — You’d think in a world starved for work, a paying job wouldn’t be a hard sell. But in the Verges, danger pays—and still no one’s buying.
The Order Patrol, a special-jurisdiction enforcement agency covering the entire region, says it can’t keep up with demand. Not for arrests—for bodies in uniform.
“We’ve lost twenty-two this year. That’s not injured—that’s dead,” said Chief Berl Wydridge, head of the Everwind City field office, which also functions as Order Patrol’s regional HQ. “Nobody wants this job. Too much lawlessness, not enough law.”
The danger is real. The most recent incident—just eight weeks ago—left two agents dead during a fugitive recovery near Halfshaer, a town so infamous for criminal activity it’s been nicknamed “The Open Grave.”
“The pay’s decent,” Wydridge added, “and when you look at the kill ratio, it don’t seem that bad.”
Applicants need to be at least sixteen, in good health, and able to pass a background check—though Wydridge joked that “if you’ve got two eyes and a pulse, we’ll talk.”
Special Agent Toren Murback, stationed at the Everwind City office, put it bluntly:
“No one joins because no one wants to die. But we’re dying because no one joins. That’s the loop. That’s the job.”
